Artist Statement
Abby Schwab encompasses her queer and feminine identites, experiences and observations and displays them to her audiences through various mediums, such as printmaking, painting, and sculpture. In her work, she explores these elements through symbolism and imagery of the body, visual vulnerability, and narratives, some of which are derived from personal experiences. As a multidisciplinary artist, she uses digital manipulation of imagery to achieve a basis for her paintings and printmaking. Through each media, she experiments with the physicality of the materials to achieve a tactile stimulation of the work in connection with the subject matter.

Abby explores femininity and nature by implementing themes of the natural world and the body, creating an interconnected interaction between them. She strives to create a collection of real bodies represented throughout her work. The figures explore women’s relationship with their bodies, a more realistic and often taboo anatomy that unsettles the objectification of the female nude and languages of desire.
Illustrative symbols begin to represent a truth which reveals itself slowly within the personal mythology of her work. Many times, a portion of their symbolism is connected to wings and the freedom and aspirations they represent, as well as the religious connotations they serve. Symbolism encourages a deeper dive into her complicated relationship with religion and the struggle between that world and her personal identities.

In recent works, Schwab is exploring the consequences of growing up in a strict Christian community and its impacts on the person she became. These memories stay with her, haunt her, drive her and push her to combat the hatred she was taught and to love and accept herself as the queer woman she is today. The process of creating these works has allowed her to come across a newfound compassion toward herself, when she rarely takes the time to realize her worth.
